Military Camps

PA07507402

There will be a fixed campsite for both US and CS forces. These camps will not be used as quarters for any civilian participants. Historically, the Union army on this campaign had no tents for men under the rank of Major. The Confederates were allocated “six tent-flies for every 100 men” during the Kentucky Campaign. A-frame and Sibley tents will be allowed to better interpret the battalion in camp. Wall tents should be used only by officers and will not appear on company streets. Fires will be restricted to company kitchen areas and battalion headquarters areas. NO FIRE PITS! All camps will be located on parts of the original battlefield. We ask that you respect the field and dispose of trash properly.

Battalion staff will establish company streets. Separate artillery camps may be established under the direction of the event’s Chief of Artillery with the permission of the overall military commander.

Fires in the traditional fixed camps will only be permitted in designated kitchen areas (not in the company streets.) FIRES WILL BE ABOVE GROUND! NO PITS WILL BE DUG!

Unit flags may be flown during arrival times to aid in finding your camps and muster points. However, once camps are closed to vehicles only one designated flag for each battalion will be permitted. Civilians may only visit the Military Camp under escort and are encouraged to make their visits brief.

Camp furniture should be of period style and kept to a minimum. Blankets, Quilts, and other bedding should be of period nature, in general use by the common person prior to 1863. Anachronistic items will not be allowed. Items that are necessary for health and welfare will be kept out of the sight of other participants and the general public. Visible food containers and utensils must be of proper type for the time of the Battle of Perryville and of the type common to the general public prior to 1863.

Please restrict lighting devices to candles and/or soldier-improvised oil lamps. Smoking in public is limited to pipes and cigars. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed on park property. Electronic entertainment and communication devices may not be used during the event weekend unless under emergency circumstances.

Vehicles will be permitted to enter camps to unload until Saturday at 5:00 A.M. As a suggestion, you may wish to limit camping equipment to what you can carry if you need to enter camps after that time. Vehicles must be out of camp and parked in designated parking areas immediately after equipment is unloaded. No vehicles will be allowed in camps after 5:00 A.M. Saturday morning and may not return to camp until the event is over. Inclement weather may alter this vehicle plan. Vehicle restrictions will be strictly enforced.

Modern camping is not allowed at Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site. There are no amenities for modern camping. Motor homes are to be placed in the reenactor parking lot or in nearby campground facilities. No tents of any kind are allowed in the reenactor parking area. These standards will be strictly enforced.
